Because I could not stop for Death

  1. Because I could not stop for Death —
  2. He kindly stopped for me —
  3. The Carriage held but just Ourselves —
  4. And Immortality.
  5.
  6. We slowly drove — He knew no haste
  7. And I had put away
  8. My labor and my leisure too,
  9. For His Civility —
  10.
  11. We passed the School, where Children strove
  12. At Recess — in the Ring —
  13. We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain —
  14. We passed the Setting Sun —
  15.
  16. Or rather — He passed Us —
  17. The Dews drew quivering and chill —
  18. For only Gossamer, my Gown —
  19. My Tippet — only Tulle —
  20.
  21. We paused before a House that seemed
  22. A Swelling of the Ground —
  23. The Roof was scarcely visible —
  24. The Cornice — in the Ground —
  25.
  26. Since then — 'tis Centuries — and yet
  27. Feels shorter than the Day
  28. I first surmised the Horses' Heads
  29. Were toward Eternity —
