  2. The summer lapsed away, --
  3. Too imperceptible, at last,
  4. To seem like perfidy.
  5.  
  6. A quietness distilled,
  7. As twilight long begun,
  8. Or Nature, spending with herself
  9. Sequestered afternoon.
  10.  
  11. The dusk drew earlier in,
  12. The morning foreign shone, --
  13. A courteous, yet harrowing grace,
  14. As guest who would be gone.
  15.  
  16. And thus, without a wing,
  17. Or service of a keel,
  18. Our summer made her light escape
  19. Into the beautiful.
