  1. What though the Sun had left my sky;
  2. To save me from despair
  3. The blessed Moon arose on high,
  4. And shone serenely there.
  5.
  6. I watched her, with a tearful gaze,
  7. Rise slowly o'er the hill,
  8. While through the dim horizon's haze
  9. Her light gleamed faint and chill.
  10.
  11. I thought such wan and lifeless beams
  12. Could ne'er my heart repay
  13. For the bright sun's most transient gleams
  14. That cheered me through the day:
  15.
  16. But, as above that mist's control
  17. She rose, and brighter shone,
  18. I felt her light upon my soul;
  19. But now--that light is gone!
  20.
  21. Thick vapours snatched her from my sight,
  22. And I was darkling left,
  23. All in the cold and gloomy night,
  24. Of light and hope bereft:
  25.
  26. Until, methought, a little star
  27. Shone forth with trembling ray,
  28. To cheer me with its light afar--
  29. But that, too, passed away.
  30.
  31. Anon, an earthly meteor blazed
  32. The gloomy darkness through;
  33. I smiled, yet trembled while I gazed--
  34. But that soon vanished too!
  35.
  36. And darker, drearier fell the night
  37. Upon my spirit then;--
  38. But what is that faint struggling light?
  39. Is it the Moon again?
  40.
  41. Kind Heaven! increase that silvery gleam
  42. And bid these clouds depart,
  43. And let her soft celestial beam
  44. Restore my fainting heart!
  45.
  46.
