  1. Lo! 'tis a gala night
  2. Within the lonesome latter years!
  3. An angel throng, bewinged, bedight
  4. In veils, and drowned in tears,
  5. Sit in a theatre, to see
  6. A play of hopes and fears,
  7. While the orchestra breathes fitfully
  8. The music of the spheres.
  9.
  10. Mimes, in the form of God on high,
  11. Mutter and mumble low,
  12. And hither and thither fly--
  13. Mere puppets they, who come and go
  14. At bidding of vast formless things
  15. That shift the scenery to and fro,
  16. Flapping from out their Condor wings
  17. Invisible Wo!
  18.
  19. That motley drama--oh, be sure
  20. It shall not be forgot!
  21. With its Phantom chased for evermore,
  22. By a crowd that seize it not,
  23. Through a circle that ever returneth in
  24. To the self-same spot,
  25. And much of Madness, and more of Sin,
  26. And Horror the soul of the plot.
  27.
  28. But see, amid the mimic rout
  29. A crawling shape intrude!
  30. A blood-red thing that writhes from out
  31. The scenic solitude!
  32. It writhes!--it writhes!--with mortal pangs
  33. The mimes become its food,
  34. And the angels sob at vermin fangs
  35. In human gore imbued.
  36.
  37. Out--out are the lights--out all!
  38. And, over each quivering form,
  39. The curtain, a funeral pall,
  40. Comes down with the rush of a storm,
  41. And the angels, all pallid and wan,
  42. Uprising, unveiling, affirm
  43. That the play is the tragedy, "Man,"
  44. And its hero the Conqueror Worm.
  45.
  46.
  47. 1838
