  1. By a route obscure and lonely,
  2. Haunted by ill angels only,
  3. Where an Eidolon, named NIGHT,
  4. On a black throne reigns upright,
  5. I have reached these lands but newly
  6. From an ultimate dim Thule--
  7. From a wild weird clime that lieth, sublime,
  8. Out of SPACE--out of TIME.
  9.
  10. Bottomless vales and boundless floods,
  11. And chasms, and caves, and Titan woods,
  12. With forms that no man can discover
  13. For the dews that drip all over;
  14. Mountains toppling evermore
  15. Into seas without a shore;
  16. Seas that restlessly aspire,
  17. Surging, unto skies of fire;
  18. Lakes that endlessly outspread
  19. Their lone waters--lone and dead,
  20. Their still waters--still and chilly
  21. With the snows of the lolling lily.
  22.
  23. By the lakes that thus outspread
  24. Their lone waters, lone and dead,--
  25. Their sad waters, sad and chilly
  26. With the snows of the lolling lily,--
  27.
  28. By the mountains--near the river
  29. Murmuring lowly, murmuring ever,--
  30. By the gray woods,--by the swamp
  31. Where the toad and the newt encamp,--
  32. By the dismal tarns and pools
  33. Where dwell the Ghouls,--
  34. By each spot the most unholy--
  35. In each nook most melancholy,--
  36.
  37. There the traveller meets aghast
  38. Sheeted Memories of the past--
  39. Shrouded forms that start and sigh
  40. As they pass the wanderer by--
  41. White-robed forms of friends long given,
  42. In agony, to the Earth--and Heaven.
  43.
  44. For the heart whose woes are legion
  45. 'Tis a peaceful, soothing region--
  46. For the spirit that walks in shadow
  47. 'Tis--oh, 'tis an Eldorado!
  48. But the traveller, travelling through it,
  49. May not--dare not openly view it;
  50. Never its mysteries are exposed
  51. To the weak human eye unclosed;
  52. So wills its King, who hath forbid
  53. The uplifting of the fringed lid;
  54. And thus the sad Soul that here passes
  55. Beholds it but through darkened glasses.
  56.
  57. By a route obscure and lonely,
  58. Haunted by ill angels only.
  59.
  60. Where an Eidolon, named NIGHT,
  61. On a black throne reigns upright,
  62. I have wandered home but newly
  63. From this ultimate dim Thule.
  64.

  66. 1844
