  1. A LATE lark twitters from the quiet skies;
  2. And from the west,
  3. Where the sun, his day’s work ended,
  4. Lingers as in content,
  5. There falls on the old, grey city
  6. An influence luminous and serene,
  7. A shining peace.
  8.
  9. The smoke ascends
  10. In a rosy-and-golden haze. The spires
  11. Shine, and are changed. In the valley
  12. Shadows rise. The lark sings on. The sun,
  13. Closing his benediction,
  14. Sinks, and the darkening air
  15. Thrills with a sense of the triumphing night—
  16. Night with her train of stars
  17. And her great gift of sleep.
  18.
  19. So be my passing!
  20. My task accomplished and the long day done,
  21. My wages taken, and in my heart
  22. Some late lark singing,
  23. Let me be gathered to the quiet west,
  24. The sundown splendid and serene,
  25. Death.
