  1. Thou wast that all to me, love,
  2. For which my soul did pine--
  3. A green isle in the sea, love,
  4. A fountain and a shrine,
  5. All wreathed with fairy fruits and flowers,
  6. And all the flowers were mine.
  7.
  8. Ah, dream too bright to last!
  9. Ah, starry Hope! that didst arise
  10. But to be overcast!
  11. A voice from out the Future cries,
  12. "On! on!"--but o'er the Past
  13. (Dim gulf!) my spirit hovering lies
  14. Mute, motionless, aghast!
  15.
  16. For, alas! alas! with me
  17. The light of Life is o'er!
  18. "No more--no more--no more"--
  19. (Such language holds the solemn sea
  20. To the sands upon the shore)
  21. Shall bloom the thunder-blasted tree,
  22. Or the stricken eagle soar!
  23.
  24. And all my days are trances,
  25. And all my nightly dreams
  26. Are where thy dark eye glances,
  27. And where thy footstep gleams--
  28. In what ethereal dances,
  29. By what eternal streams!
  30.
  31. Alas! for that accursed time
  32. They bore thee o'er the billow,
  33. From love to titled age and crime,
  34. And an unholy pillow!
  35. From me, and from our misty clime,
  36. Where weeps the silver willow!
  37.
